Three different graduation ceremonies were held for the different colleges Saturday afternoon, May 7, 2022, in Lantz Arena; Lumpkin College of Business and Technology, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the College of Education all held ceremonies for the students in the respective colleges.

Flamm Orchards hires around 130 to 150 workers per season to plant, tend to and process crops for thousands of families. Flamm Orchards is one of many farms in cooperation with Illinois’ statewide program to curb hunger and help stock food banks. Crops are sorted into categories where lesser-rated produce is donated to food banks.

Bruce Hecksel performs with Julie Patchouli Thursday night at “The Landscape of Guitar” in the Doudna Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. “We were warming up to this song (Sounds of Silence) and our tour manager came in and said ‘you should play that tonight.’ We looked at each other and then at him and said ‘it isn’t on the approved play list.’ Our tour manager said ‘I don’t care, you should play it.’ So we went out there and played the song and we were only four words in when the entire place erupted in cheers,” Patchouli said.

Rachel Webb, a graduate student studying secondary math education, studies Thursday afternoon in the Buzzard Hall lobby. Webb is a math teacher at Flora High School, and says she has one more summer before she is done with her master’s degree. “My program was designed so teachers could take classes over the summer, and not during the school year. I’ve enjoyed most of my classes, it’s six weeks of classes with a semesters worth of work. This way I don’t have to worry about teaching on top of my classes, it’s still a lot of work though,” Webb said. “My students are proud of me for getting my masters. One student asked me if I was getting my doctorate, and I said no, but he still called me Dr. Webb. My students look up to me more. They see me persevering and continuing my education and they think ‘maybe I can do that too’.”

Bailey Olsen, a senior graphic design major, donates blood Thursday afternoon in the Student Recreation Center at Lantz Arena. The Red Cross spent the day at the recreation center collecting blood from students, and community members. “I’m here over the summer so I can work and take classes. I got the call and figured, I’m not doing anything on Thursday, why not. I know that O+ is especially in need, I got O+, I’m not doing anything with it, might as well right,” Olsen said, “As a college student, I can’t always donate money to causes I like, I don’t always have time to go volunteer, so for this, I can come in for a couple of minutes. It’s something I can do to be helpful that doesn’t take a lot of my time or cost anything cause it’s free so, why not.”

Abigail Robison, a fourth grader at Jefferson Elementary School, learns to read sheet music from Addison Bayer an Eastern student, Tuesday afternoon in the Doudna Fine Arts Center. “It’s fun and exciting to get lessons because we are about to become family,” Robison said. Bayer has been playing for ten years and really enjoys giving lessons, especially during the summer when she has more free time. “During the school year it’s harder to get the time because of classes and practices,” Bayer said.

I was here last summer, there’s a lot less people. It’s interesting, my classes are smaller too so that’s nice. You’re taking 16 weeks of material and cramming them into a few weeks so the classes are very intense, but it’s easier to connect.” Ruppert said.

Ferguson got first in her heat, Schlenker got second, and Spagnola got third respectively. Ferguson will go on to the finals on Saturday.
