Panthers of the Week: Giovana Larregui López, Justin Thomas

The female Panther of the Week is going to senior outside hitter Giovana Larregui López.

Outside hitter Giovana Larregui López bumps the ball on return during the volleyball game against the University of Missouri Tigers Friday afternoon at Lantz Arena. The Panthers lost 3-1. Larregui López had 14 kills and scored 17 points. (Rob Le Cates)

The outside hitter from Carolina, Puerto Rico helped the Panthers sweep the Mizzou Tigers 3-0 Thursday evening at Lantz Arena.

Larregui López led the Panthers in kills on Thursday’s game with 15 kills.

Larregui López ended the game with three digs, three blocks and one service ace.

On the last play of the night, setter Catalina Rochaix set up Larregui López for a kill.

Larregui López killed the ball over the net before any Tigers’ player could keep the play alive.

With this win, the Panthers advanced to 10-0.

The male Panther of the Week is going to graduate wide receiver Justin Thomas.

The wide receiver from Wixom, Michigan scored two touchdowns to help the Panthers win the Mid-American Classic against the Illinois State Redbirds.

This was Thomas’ first game of the season.

Thomas put the Panthers on the board first as he caught the ball from quarterback Pierce Holley.

Thomas ran the ball into the end zone to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead in the second quarter.

Thomas’ last touchdown happened with less than 36 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Holley threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Thomas as Thomas made sure both of his feet were in bounds.

The Panthers held off the Redbirds 14-13 to win the Mid-American Classic for the first time since 2016.
