Butler breakaway spells Eastern defeat

Freshman goalie Kaylin Lorbert blocked one of Angie Muir’s shots but not the other.

Lorbert blocked the first shot from a Butler breakaway but Muir scored from 20 yards out on a rebound in the 86th minute as Butler defeated Eastern 1-0 on Saturday.

“I came out for the rebound and she kind of beat me to it,” Lorbert said.

Lorbert, who saw her first collegiate competition in Indianapolis, made eight saves and started the second half against the Bulldogs.

“We were kind of caught in transition,” Eastern head coach Tim Nowak said.

Before Muir’s shots Eastern had its best opportunity to score when sophomore forward Rachel Hamilton centered a ball toward freshman forward Angela Ziemba. Ziemba and the other Panthers were not able to score which led to the Butler breakaway.

“It was in the right spot,” Nowak said. “We just couldn’t get the shot off.”

Senior forward Kellie Floyd led the Panthers with two shots and both of those shots were on goal. Floyd was last year’s co-Ohio Valley Conference player of the year.

Sophomore goalie Jenny Williams played the first half and made two saves. Williams was named to last year’s All-OVC Newcomer team.

Eastern will conclude its preseason against Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis at 4 p.m. on Aug. 25 at Lakeside Field.
