Top seeds square off in OVC semifinals

All four of the top seeds in the Ohio Valley Conference women’s basketball tournament remain and will be in action Friday, with the winners hoping to advance to Saturday’s championship game. Saturday’s winner will receive the OVC’s automatic berth into the 64-team NCAA Tournament.

Game one will feature the top-seeded Eastern Kentucky Colonels and the fourth-seeded Jacksonville State Gamecocks.

The Colonels (22-1, 16-1 OVC) advanced with an easy 94-69 victory over eighth-seeded Murray State on Tuesday night in Richmond, Ky. The Colonels, who have won 13 games in a row, were led by double-doubles from senior forwards Miranda Eckerle (27 points, 15 rebounds) and Candis Cook (13 points, 10 rebounds).

The Gamecocks (16-13, 10-7) beat fifth-seeded Tennessee State 65-64 Tuesday in Jacksonville, Ala.

Senior forward Shanika Freeman scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Junior forward Rebecca Haynes chipped in 12.

The Colonels swept the Gamecocks in the teams’ two meetings this season. Eckerle averaged 16 points for the Colonels against Jacksonville State, and Freeman averaged 17 in the losses to Eastern Kentucky.

Tip-off for Eastern Kentucky-Jacksonville State is set for noon Friday in Nashville.

Game two will feature the second-seeded Southeast Missouri Redhawks and the third-seeded Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles.

The Redhawks (22-7, 15-2) defeated seventh-seeded Samford 47-45 Tuesday night in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Junior forward Tatiana Conceicao led the Redhawks with a game-high 19 points. Senior center Chandra Brown recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Redhawks.

The Golden Eagles advanced with a 70-51 victory over sixth-seeded Tennessee-Martin.

Junior center Emily Christian was the only Golden Eagle in double figures, as she scored a game-high 32 points on 13-of-17 shooting.

The two teams spit their games this year, each winning on its home court. Conceicao, the OVC’s second leading scorer at 17.9 points per game, averaged 23.5 points against Tech this season. Christian, who led the league in scoring with 19.6 points, scored 21.5 against the Redhawks this season.

The Redhawks and Golden Eagles are scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m Friday in Nashville.
