Eastern runners’ last chance

The Last Chance track meet will be held this weekend at Notre Dame. The meet is designated for athletes to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championship meet.

Head women’s track coach Mary Wallace said the meet is also a good time for athletes to have one last chance to break a school record and to qualify for the NCAA Championships. It also gives them a chance to focus on one event if they do multiple events normally.

From the women’s team, sophomore Nicolene Galas will compete in the pole vault, junior Denise Jones in the high jump and senior Mary Wood in the pole vault.

Wallace says Wood and Galas had a good meet last weekend and have been strong and confident in their meets.

“(Wood) has a good shot at doing well based on her performance last weekend,” Wallace said. “Denise has her ups and downs but has been confident and has had good training days.”

“I’m very excited to go to this meet,” Galas said. “I have worked very hard with my coach and want to make something happen”

Wood is also excited about the competition.

“Everyone there is competing to place for nationals, and I am very excited to be going,” Wood said.

The meet will have high-caliber competition and is expected to be a quality meet.

“We do not know what kind of competition will be there until we get there,” men’s head coach Tom Akers said. “There are few last chance qualifying meets in the country, and there will be plenty of good competition.”

Junior distance runner Dan Strackeljahn will compete in the 1600m race.

“We hope he will do real well,” Akers said. “He is running faster at this time this year than he was last year.”
