Window paintings judged for contest

The 2013 ROCFest window painting competition brought the themes from the past nine years to life for residence hall students to experience the evolution of rock.

Dawn Howe, the Residence Hall Association secretary and senior family and consumer sciences major, said a “light bulb clicked,” when she thought of the word evolution for this year overall theme at an executive board meeting.

The judges looked for creativity and originality, theme, attractiveness and effort when deliberating over the paintings.

RHA Vice President Patrick Morrow,  a senior family and consumer sciences major, said they are wanting to see how well the residents took their time on their windows and how they used their creativity.

Morrow said he also wants to see how the residents incorporated Breast Cancer Awareness week into their window design.

The previous themes throughout the past nine years were “Rock Around the Clock,” “Mardi Gras,” “Rock Around the World,” “Rock Through Time,” “Rockin the Red Carpet,” “Rock the Beat,” “School House Roc,” and “Evolution.”

Weller’s “Rock Around the World” theme included the Eastern castle, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Peru lines, Great Wall of China, the Pyramids, Big Ben and the Eiffel Tower with small people painted beside the monuments playing musical instruments.

Kaitlyn Gabric, a senior special education and early childhood education major and a painter for Weller Hall, said they wanted to merge monuments that people would know and recognize right away for the window design.

The other artists of Weller Hall include Michael Neal, Joe Oliver, Anna Wiznerowicz and Dominique Deweese.

Thomas Hall’s theme, “Rock Around the Clock,” displays musical notes and people dancing from day to night.

Jessica Newenhouse, a freshman Thomas resident, said their hall all decided to incorporate musical notes as their main focus.

“The first thing that came to our mind was music notes,” Newenhouse said.

Across the quad in Taylor Hall for the School House Roc, residents incorporated a train station on the front desk window, as well as other paintings across all the windows.

The pink and black colors of Andrew’s Hall integrated pink ribbons all throughout their theme “Rock the Beat.”

In their design they bring out popular bands and artist from the 1950s to now from Elton John to Lady Gaga.

Lincoln Stevenson and Douglas window display has the theme “Rock Through Time,” shows a Pink Panther rock band and the evolution of man turning into a rock star with the 1960s,  ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s music.

Abby Ford, an RHA adviser, said the hall that sticks best to their team will win the window competition.

The window painting competition and the rest of the ROCfest winners will be announced Thursday, Sept. 26.
