Incoming students say campus size was big factor

Campus size is a major factor for incoming freshman and their choosing to attend Eastern.

Jaycye Vedder, a special education major from Prarie Central High School in Fairbury, said the size of the campus was one of the major contributing factors to enrolling at Eastern.

“It’s all close together and the teachers seemed really interested in everybody,” Vedder said. “It’s really homey.”

“I looked at Carbondale, I have gone there before for christian youth events and it was a lot of walking and it was kind of spread out,” said Andrew Dilbeck, an undecided major from Mt. Zion High School in Mt. Zion. “I like this one because everthing is really close together.”

Dilbeck said that he likes the feel of the campus and it does not feel like he will be treated differently for being a freshman.

Haley Builta, an education major from Rochester High School in Rochester, said she was attracted by the strngth of the education department.

“Because I want to become a teacher and this is a great program for teachers,” Builta said. “I also looked at SIU-E, but Eastern was he better choice for what I want to become.”

Devin Vail, a history education major from Resurrection High School in Chicago, said she likes the challenge of the education department here.

“They require a little bit more from you than other schools do and they focus like on education, like I have to have a higher GPA in order to get my education certification than other students at other colleges,” Vail said.

She said the only thing she would change about the college is when she calls with a question she thinks they could be more helpful.

“When I call for like help with a question I wish they were a little more willing to work with me,” Vail said.

Andrew Butler, an accounting major from Germantown High School in Germantown, Tenn., said family was the deciding factor in coming to Eastern.

“My mom went here, grand-mother, grand-father,” Butler said.

He said he made the decision to come to Eastern even after looking at Tulane, Ole Miss, Alabama and Airforce.
