Panther Briefs: Brooks earns OVC honor

Eastern freshman DeMarcus Brooks picked up another Ohio Valley Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week award this week.

Brooks won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes as Eastern won the team title at the Lee Calhoun Memorial in Macomb.

He posted a winning time of 10.54 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 21.49 in the 200-meter dash.

Additionally, Brooks was a member of the winning 400-meter relay team that posted a season best 41.30 seconds.

This is Brooks’ second honor this season as Male Track Athlete of the Week.

He has already hit the NCAA regional qualifying time in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes.

Golfer signs with Eastern

Emily Calhoon, an Effingham St. Anthony High School senior, will play golf at Eastern next season.

Calhoon signed her National Letter of Intent the other day, according to the Effingham Daily News.

Calhoon led the Bulldogs to a Class A State girl’s golf title by finishing sixth at the state meet.

The Bulldogs also won a state title during her junior year as Calhoon finished 18th.

Calhoon joins former teammates, including red-shirt junior Katie Imburgia and freshman Kathryn Koester.

Eastern grad named head coach

John Marsaglia, an Eastern grad and former Eastern baseball player, has been named the head softball coach at Lincoln Land Community College, according to the State Journal-Register.

Marsaglia is a Springfield Lanphier graduate.

He earned a master’s degree from Illinois-Springfield and is taking classes at Southern Illinois Carbondale to earn his doctorate.
