Column: Decision time for sprinter Chevon Walker

Chevon Walker has a lot of speed.

The Eastern red-shirt sophomore running back and track sprinter said Saturday he’s taking his time on whether or not he’s going to run track for the remainder of the season or participate with the football team in the spring.

Walker said on Saturday he would really like to run track, but still wants to be with the football team for workouts and weightlifting.

Walker is a transfer from University of Florida-Gainsville.

He was second on the football team in rushing yards with 399 this past fall.

He was supposed to run in the indoor season, but because of academic issues, which he said are cleared up, he did not run on Saturday.

“I just want to take the weekend (to see) if I want to do (track) or football,” Walker said. “It’s kind of hard ’cause I do want to run track and want to be able to be with the football team because I’m now a captain. I want to be a leader. It’s hard to think about.”

Walker is meeting with track coaches on Monday, and will decide from there.

This is big.

Walker is the ideal number one running back heading into spring football with the graduation of senior running back Travorus Bess.

He could be the fastest runner on the men’s track team, behind some freshmen. He is definitely the fastest on the football team. If Walker is able to find holes on the football field, he zooms. But if not, he does a lot of juking and loses yardage.

But with the addition of Mon Williams, another Florida transfer into a running back position, he could be the top running back.

Williams was rated as the No. 12 running back in the nation coming out of high school according to Rivals.com. A first-team All-State performer in Texas, he rushed for 1,672 yards with 17 touchdowns as a senior after a junior campaign with 1,499 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Williams told the Times Courier that he could be used in a different situation. Williams also said that he wouldn’t mind being the No. 1 running back.

Walker’s decision will be big. One just has to wait to see what he decides.

“I’m going to tell (the coaches) what I want to do,” Walker said.
