Eastern’s men and women’s indoor track team’s both looked impressive in their second meet of the season.

The men’s team finished second with 201 points and the women’s team finished third with 107.5 points at the annual EIU Mega Meet Saturday at Lantz Fieldhouse.

Indiana State placed first in both the men’s and women’s events winning the meet.

Neither Eastern team had a first place finish in any event, but both squads had a number of top 5 finishes.

“I think everyone showed their best effort,” junior sprinter Violet Nwordu said. “We did just come back from a long vacation, and everyone is just trying to get back to getting used to competition.”

Nwordu was solid in two races finishing third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.01 seconds and fourth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.73 seconds.

“My game plan is to get out and I have a goal for every race,” Nwordu said. “7.67 is the time I want for the 60-meter dash and for the 200-meter run I have a 24.9 goal, and every time I go out there that’s what I think about. I do not worry about anyone else just those numbers.”

Jumper Jenna Uhe was also important for the Panthers with a second place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 37 feet, eight inches and a third place finish in the long jump with a jump of 17’07.

Sophomore thrower Kandace Arnold had another successful meet finishing second in shot put with a throw of 44’10.50, while finishing third in weight throw with a toss of 53’09.25.

For the men, eight athletes finished in the top three of their events.

The men’s 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams both finished in second place.

“I was just worried about getting the baton and improving on whatever position we were in,” senior middle distance runner Chris Wesson said. “But when I got the baton we had a pretty good gap, so I was just trying to make it farther.”

Top five finishers for the men’s team also included freshman Joe Noonan in the pole vault with a jump of 15’07 (third), junior middle distance runner David Holm in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:28.58 (second), and sophomore middle distance runner Justin Stewart’s second-place finish in the 600-meters with a time of 1:22.44.

Senior jumper Obe Eruteya also had another solid meet. After finishing first at the EIU Early Bird Invite, Eruteya’s jump of 6’07.75 in the high jump was good for third place in the Mega Meet.

“Overall I think we did pretty well,” said sophomore pole-vaulter Dorrian White. “It was an opening meet and we made a lot of improvements and know where we have to go from here.”

Both the men’s and women’s team will compete again next Saturday at the Illinois Invitational in Champaign, Ill.
