X-rays come back negative for Thomas

Donald Thomas’ X-rays came back negative on his right foot Monday morning, Eastern’s middle linebacker said.

The 2006 Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year hurt his foot with 10 minutes, 47 seconds left in the second quarter of Saturday’s football game at Murray State.

The 5-foot-10, 237-pound Thomas said he is questionable for this Saturday’s game against Tennessee-Martin with a foot sprain.

On the play, Thomas and linebacker Matt Westrick tackled Murray State wide receiver DeAngelo Nelson after Nelson caught a pass coming over the middle.

Thomas said he didn’t hear anything snap on the play, and came back in later in the first half after getting his right ankle re-taped.

But he came out after halftime with a boot on his right foot and his shoulder pads off.

“I was just trying to fight through the pain,” Thomas said. “At the time, I thought I was just hurt. I just realized once I was out there I was injured. We just wanted to be on the safe side.”

Eastern defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni said he didn’t anticipate Thomas practicing this week.

Thomas said the decision to practice would have to come from the coaching staff and the trainers.

“I guess it just depends on how it feels,” Bellantoni said about whether Thomas will play. “I know it’s going to have to take something pretty serious to keep him out of the game.”

Freshman Alain Marcelin filled in for Thomas in the second half of the game at Murray. The 6-0, 215-pound Mirimar, Fla., native finished the Murray game with four solo tackles.
