Panthers pull out road win

Eastern got a second chance and this time got it right. For the second time this year Eastern’s men basketball team got an early lead on Morehead State but this time on the road, it left getting the 65-62 victory and ending its eight-game losing streak.Saturday marked the first Ohio Valley Conference road win since its Dec. 7 win at Tennessee Tech.”I think it was huge for us because there’s been times we were right there at the buzzer and couldn’t get it done,” said Eastern forward Jake Byrne. Eastern struggled late and almost didn’t record its sixth win of the season. With 1 minute, 34 seconds left and Eastern up 60-52, Eastern committed two fouls and two turnovers resulting in 8-2 Eagles run during the next minute. With six seconds left, Eastern sophomore point guard Mike Robinson was at the foul line with an opportunity to give the Panthers a safe four-point lead. The Chicago native missed the back half of the one-and-one but a 3-point attempt by Morehead’s Shaun Williams banged off the back of the rim.”Even though we struggled down the stretch, we found a way to win and that’s important,” Byrne said.Eastern jumped out to a 10-2 lead early while Williams came in a sub. Williams was not in the starting lineup for the second straight game.”Our coaches told us they had been giving (Williams) less minutes,” Byrne said. “They went with a little bit smaller lineup but we knew we could win from that early run.”Eastern (6-16, 2-11 OVC) notched its second road victory all season (both in the OVC) by shooting 59 percent from the field and making 13 of 14 free throws in the second half.”Last time we played them (a 71-63 loss in Dec. 20), we had a 15-point lead and let it slip away,” Byrne said. “That was a thorn in our side.”The Panthers had balanced scoring with four players in double figures. Romain Martin’s 13 points led Eastern.Morehead State came in second in the OVC in rebounding margin and scoring defense but lapses in both categories is what the Eagles stressed caused the loss.”In three of the last four games (all losses), we just have not done a good job of that,” MSU head coach Donnie Tyndall said in the post game press conference. “We were out-rebounded 37 to 27 and allowed them to shoot 50 percent from the field and hit only 38.2 percent ourselves.”For official box score click here.
