Morehead bench beats Eastern

Eastern’s starting five outscored Morehead State’s starters 49-18 Saturday afternoon. But the Eagles continue to find ways to win and got 53 points from their bench. The Panthers fell 71-59 at Johnson Arena in Morehead, Ky., and the Eagles extended their winning streak to nine, a streak that started on Dec. 20 in Charleston.”They were the better team that night,” said sophomore forward Rachel Galligan. “They out-rebounded us, they out-hustled us; they outplayed us.”Morehead State’s back-up center Holly Williams had a game-high 20 points, a career high for the senior, and three other reserves also scored double-digit points to keep Morehead in first place in the Ohio Valley Conference.”I don’t think I have ever seen a box score like that in my 14 years (as a coach),” said Eastern head coach Brady Sallee. “(Morehead State) is extremely unselfish, so focused on the execution and not on who is executing. We knew they had good kids coming off the bench, but not 53 points good.”Morehead State’s starters came into the game averaging 34.1 points per game with 6-foot-3 center LaKrisha Brown leading the way at 11.3 points per game. Brown was held to five points Saturday. But consistent bench scoring is nothing new for the Eagles. Reserves Tarah Combs and Anitha Smith-Williams are the team’s third and fourth-leading scorers and scored 10 points each in Saturday’s game.”If you go down the line, one through eight could start for them, and one through eight could come off the bench,” Sallee said about Morehead’s depth. “But the most important thing is none of them care either way.” Eastern (7-14, 4-8 OVC) limited its turnovers to 14 in its first loss since Jan. 13, but Morehead State (11-9, 10-2 ) capitalized on the mistakes and scored 17 points off Eastern’s turnovers.Morehead State’s size advantage made it tough for Eastern’s post players. Galligan had 13 points but could only pull down four rebounds. Galligan and fellow forward Meagan Scaggs were both in foul trouble and played only 36 minutes combined. The pair had nine fouls and eight rebounds combined.Galligan said when she would attempt to get in front of a player in the post on defense, a foul would be called.”I felt like every two seconds I was getting called for foul which was really frustrating for me,” Galligan said. “It’s the way I’ve played all year but it’s up to me to adjust and stop doing it.”The Panthers will get back to action at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in Lantz Arena against Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks (5-16, 2-10) are currently in last place in the OVC. It will be the first game this season between Eastern and Jacksonville State. For official box score click here.
