Another conference game loss

Mike Miller is getting sick of the trip to Martin, Tenn.

After Eastern’s 67-43 loss Thursday night at Tennessee-Martin, the Panthers second-year head coach has now lost each of his two games at the Elam Center by 24 points. Eastern lost 85-61 at Martin on Feb. 11, 2006.

“I was pretty upset with them tonight,” Miller said. “We’re looking for a group of players to do the things we need to get done, not when everything is fine, but when things aren’t going well.”

With eight newcomers this season, Miller pointed lack of experience as a consistent problem in road games.

“We’re trying to find someone to take that leadership role and hopefully we can get that cleaned up,” Miller said.

UT Martin used a 13-2 run in the final seven and a half minutes of the first half that led to a 36-21 haftime lead. The Panthers (5-13, 1-8 Ohio Valley Conference) never got closer than 16 throughout the second half.

UT Martin forward Gerald Robinson’s 15 points off the bench led the Skyhawks. The junior college transfer from Los Angeles shot six of 12 from the field.

Eastern’s leading scorer Romain Martin was held to six points on two of eight shooting, which snapped his 12-game streak of scoring in double figures. The freshman guard came into the contest averaging 15 points per game.

Panthers center Ousmane Cisse posted his second career double-double as the freshman from the Ivory Coast scored 13 points, while grabbing 10 rebounds.

Despite shooting two of 11 from beyond the three-point arc, Miller was satisfied with the offensive execution and attributed the lack of scoring to jump shots simply not falling.

“We got very good shots all night particularly when the game started I was pleased,” Miller said. “My concern was the defense, specifically the focus and the attention to detail.”

Miller was displeased with the overall effort on the defensive end after giving up six layups in the first half.

“Defensively there’s no explanation for it,” Miller said. “It’s something that we’ve not done all year long, which is giving up the basket.”

The Skyhawks (5-13, 3-5) used the momentum from their 56-point second half at home against Tennessee State Saturday to shoot 48 percent from the field against the Panthers.

Eastern point guard Mike Robinson was held to a season-low two points, which was the sophomore’s lowest total since matching that mark in last season’s finale against Samford. The 2005 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year was frustrated by the Skyhawks’ zone defense all night shooting only one of nine from the field.

Eastern will try to end a eight-game conference losing streak and pick up its first win in Richmond, Ky., since 2001 when the Panthers face Eastern Kentucky at 3 p.m. Saturday.
