Greeks dominate intramurals

Kristina Boron only signed up for the intramural tennis tournament because no one else from her house did. But as she played in the championship, her Alpha Gamma Delta sorority sisters cheered her on.

“It really shows they were proud of all the hard work I did to earn first in tennis,” Boron said.

Boron has done more than participate in the tennis tournament. She has also done flag football, badminton, volleyball, basketball and softball.

She isn’t the only Greek that participates in as many intramurals as she can. The words Greek and Intramurals seem to go hand in hand as many of the fraternities and sororities participate in every event and have multiple teams.

“Most of us participate on two or three teams,” said Sarah Clark from Alpha Phi sorority and member of the Alpha Phi Gold volleyball team.

For Greeks, intramurals is just another way to get together and do something together.

“We try to make as many teams as possible,” said R.J Puoci from Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Puoci currently plays on the Delt Purple volleyball team.

As many teams as possible does not necessarily mean just one or two teams. Alpha Phi has three teams in volleyball, and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity has three teams in flag football.

Having the ability to make so many teams allows new pledges and actives to become involved and get to know each other.

“My favorite thing about intramurals was when I started playing last year for my sorority, I got to know so many girls in my pledge class,” Boron said.

While each house competes to win different events, all strive to win in the Intramural Points Race.

The points are awarded to each house when they have teams or participants in an event. When someone wins, the house receives extra points.

Five years ago, the Greek portion of the points race was turned over to Intramurals Director Kevin Linker to help prevent any fighting.

While there is friendly competition between the sororities according to Boron and Clark, the fraternities are very competitive and there are some rivalries.

“You’ve got to win,” said Puoci.

While there are rivalries between the older fraternity houses, intramurals allows the newer house to get warmed up to the Greek system, Puoci said.

Intramurals is another way for the Greek community to come together and stay active.

“Intramurals are for all people to just have fun with,” said Boron. “It’s even more fun when we actually win stuff.”
