Cyber Lounge has cyber space to spare

The newly renovated Cyber Lounge in 7th Street Underground can be used for many different functions.

From watching TV to studying to just relaxing, a student can do it all and with plenty of elbowroom to spare.

The Cyber Lounge has not been a popular place on campus, even after undergoing the recent renovations, and it is questionable why.

It’s a place to go, with several forms of entertainment.

If roommates are loud and a quiet place to study is needed, the Cyber Lounge allows one to get away, with a plethora of tables available.

The Cyber Lounge even has two big-screen TVs with couches probably more comfortable than Mom’s; a comfortable place to watch a movie or just take a rest.

Four computers with Internet capability are there for students to freely browse the ‘net or work on homework.

This place even has its own piano for students to practice on or just start a jam session.

So, why don’t more students take advantage of this place?

“I don’t think they actually know about it,” said Susan Stamm, a senior education major. “I came down here for a show and the guy was making fun of people who were watching TV during his set. So, I was like, ‘Oh, what’s down here?’ And after the show, I looked around and it looked like it would be comfortable to do your homework and stuff.”

One of the problems may be that most students just don’t know about it, or if they do, they don’t know where it’s located. Some want to keep the new venue secluded from the student masses.

“I haven’t really told too many people, ’cause I don’t want to come here and have it be filled with people,” Stamm said. “It’s kind of nice and quiet.”

At the northeast end of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union, a green awning reads 7th Street Underground.

Through the doors and down the staircase, another set of doors awaits and it is through those doors that the Cyber Lounge sits.

To the right, a set of TVs, couches and a row of computers stand waiting to be used.

To the left are many empty tables and chairs.

Also down there is a stage, complete with speakers and lights.

Much of the time, there is an entire lounge practically unused.

The Cyber Lounge also has late hours to accommodate students who like to burn the midnight oil.

The hours are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday.

“I think it would be good if it was advertised,” Stamm added. “People would take advantage of it, probably.”
