Hoping to keep scoreless streak alive

The last time the Panthers gave up any points was last November.

Eastern (3-0) thrashed North Carolina 84-7 in Greenville, S.C.

They are in the middle of a string of five consecutive shutouts and have not been scored upon this season, outscoring opponents 273-0.

The Panthers face Bowling Green on Saturday at noon at the EIU Rugby Field.

The Falcons, winners of their last game against Western Michigan, believe their aggressive practice even for a club team will have them prepared to face Eastern.

Junior scrum-half Casey Hamilton said they would try to adjust their strengths to Eastern’s weaknesses.

Although the Panthers have not given up any points, head coach Frank Graziano is still preparing for the games as if it was the season opener.

“I watch the game film ten times,” Graziano said. “I’d like to think that I do my job and work real hard at preparing a game plan but also trying to get them to improve each week.”

Even with their record-breaking 124-0 win against Michigan State last weekend, Graziano said, there are still things that have to be worked on.

Falcons head coach Kurt Weaver said he was aware of the preparation the team gets from Graziano.

He said he wants his team to come out strong, play their style of fundamental rugby, and get the ball into more hands rather than just the few players that have handled the ball more.

The Falcons have a “decent amount of speed” and might be able to handle the Panthers’ speed, Hamilton said.

But Eastern still wants to keep its scoreless streak going.

Junior co-captain and inside center Eileen O’ Rourke said she hopes that the Falcons will not be the first team to score on Eastern.

The Panthers kind of lost focus from the past game because of the lopsided score, but do realize the rest of the season is not going to be easy, she said.

Sophomore left wing Samantha Manto said the team has had a good week of practice and is ready for the challenge that awaits them.

She said two key tackles by Erin Norton against Michigan State probably kept the scoreless streak intact.
