Intramurals:The championships

B-Level Championship

#3 Team Ziss – 51

#5 T-Baggers – 47

It looked like fans would be treated to a blowout victory in the B-Level Championship as T-Baggers opened the game with a 16-4 run but couldn’t keep the momentum. Team Ziss finally started playing solid defense and went on a 12-4 run to pull within four at the halftime buzzer. A 9-2 run by Team Ziss in the second half gave them their first lead of the game at 35-34. This would be a lead they would not lose the rest of the night as T-Baggers ended the game on 18-4 run. With 7.9 seconds left, Team Ziss made a three-point play to seal the 4-point victory. Team Ziss ends the season undefeated at 8-0 and became the first team to win its league without a loss.

Women’s Championship

#2 Q Town – 39

#1 A Phi – 20 (16-point mercy rule with 2:00 left)

At this point, you’d think the women’s soccer players would be tired of winning. Think again. Before what is considered the greatest soccer recruiting class graduates, they figured they’d add one more title to their resume – three-time intramural champ. After four straight OVC soccer championships, the core group on those teams has now added three intramural basketball titles to its total of athletic domination on this campus. The team normally called “Magic Balls” the last three years changed to Q Town but it didn’t change their luck. Led by Beth Liesen, Audra Frericks, Morgan Frericks, Jill Nowak and Kim Garkie, Q Town started off the game with 11 unanswered points and led 21-14 at halftime. A 10-0 run to start off the second half allowed Q Town to cruise to the 16-point mercy rule. According to the recent intramural record books, no group has won more than three intramural championships. Another record for the EIU women’s soccer team – not exactly a major upset.

All Campus Championship

A-Level Champion: Blue Devils – 43

Fraternity Champion: Sigma Pi – 42

It may have taken until the championship game but Blue Devils finally got a majority of its team on the floor. Blue Devils just did what they’ve done the last two weeks, win another tight game. Nearly three weeks ago, intramural officials were unsure whether or not this team would even qualify for the playoffs and now they are all-campus champions.

“I kept saying it’d be nice if we could get everybody on the court at the same time,” captain/center TJ Dosch said. “This is so cool.”

In a back-and-forth first half, Blue Devils found itself down by three and trying to find an offensive spark.

“I’ll tell ya if didn’t have everybody tonight playing defense like they did, we don’t win period,” Dosch said.

Dosch led Blue Devils with 14 points with 11 coming in the second half.

“I struggled again and that’s a fact,” Dosch said. “I couldn’t get a free throw to drop to save my life and my 14 was a hard 14 that’s for sure.”

Other post players chipped in for Blue Devils as Josh Sroufek added 10 and Andrew Shick got 6.

“We really had an advantage down low and kept the pressure on them to stop us,” Dosch said. “Those guys played great games.”

Casey Burkett ran the show from the perimeter and with his team down by three with just over a minute left took over. The Hoopeston native got the ball down one and hit a fallaway three-pointer with 33 seconds left to make the score 41-40. Burkett then stepped to the line and made a pair from the charity stripe to seal the victory.

“Casey played huge down the stretch,” Dosch said. “He’s has to hit those types of shots and make good decisions for us to win. Since the beginning of the tournament, he did that and we won it.”

Ironically for Dosch, the Duke basketball fan received the new blue championship t-shirts instead of the grey of prior years. Dosch joked after about the possibility of this being a sign for his team.

“I think it was meant to be,” Dosch said. “I think Blue looks good doesn’t it? This was just so much fun every night.”
