Purple division uses mercy rule

Women’s League – Red Division

Smokers – 2, Yo Yo Yo – 0 (FORFEIT)

The “Yo Yo Yo,” team consisting of mainly EIU women soccer players failed to show up causing an immediate forfeit on the opening night of the league.

Ballers – 32, Cucoamungo – 29

On her 21st birthday, Libby Tamalunis was the cheerleader, coach and post player for her “Ballers” squad that got a comeback win in its opening game of the season. Down by three, Tamalunis led her team on a quick 8-0 run to the lead early in the first half that they would never relinquish. The junior, Special Education major had 5 points in the post. With the Ballers up 28-22 with 3:48 left in the game, Cucoamungo hit a quick shot and Tamaliunus called timeout. Coming out of the timeout, “Ballers” played a slow down inversion of the North Carolina four corners offense and they held on as the buzzer sounded for the 3-point win.

Purple Division

Average Joe’s – 37, Blumpkin Nine – 2

This one turned into a laugher almost from the opening tip. The “Average Joes” consisting of mainly WEIU employees dominated the game and won the game by the 35-point mercy rule (the largest existing slaughter rule in the intramural guidelines). The game was called after only 31 minutes of play. The Joes opened the game with a 13-0 run and didn’t allow Blumpkin Nine to score for the first 7:30 of the game. “Average Joes” were led by Jessica Kohlenberg’s 9 points and Megan Goeckner dominated in the lane, scoring 7 of the team’s first 9 points. On the perimeter, the trio-guard combination of captain Amy Smith, Julie Bourque and Whitney Self forced over 20 Blumpkin Nine turnovers and consistently got steals and open layups from its full-court trap.

“Yeah, I thought we played pretty well,” Self said. This turned out to be the understatement of the night. To add salt to the wound, “Average Joes” was able to accomplish this blowout without the services of Kate Henderson and Angie Taylor.

High Rollers – 44, Shooters 27 (16-point mercy rule with 2:00 left)

Men’s A-League – Bronze Division

OVC Champs – 57, D-Line – 37 (16-point mercy rule with 2:00 left)

In the battle of the EIU football team, speed conquered strength. “OVC Champs,” consisting of six defensive backs and two wide receivers on the Panthers team, used the shooting of Albert Brown and Alicius Nozinor to win in blowout fashion. Nozinor hit four shots from beyond the arc and ended the evening with 14 points. Brown hit a pair from long range and led his team with 18 points. “D-Line” was able to keep the score close through the first half by dumping the ball inside to Tim Kelly. Kelly, the Panthers starting defensive tackle this fall, got 18 of his team’s 37 points. “OVC Champs” turned the game into a track meet in the second half by running out for constant 3 on 2 fast breaks. “OVC Champs” used a 15-0 run to begin the second half to secure the victory. The 20-point victory in front of many Eastern athletes in the crowd puts “OVC Champs” as the clear favorite to win the Bronze Division.

Bleep Blop – 59, B Curtains Hardwood – 40 (16-point mercy rule with 2:00 left)
