BYU rolls Eastern 44-10

PROVO, Utah – It was over quick.

Brigham Young scored two touchdowns in the game’s opening 6:05 on the way to a 44-10 drubbing Of Eastern at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Despite being picked off twice, BYU junior quarterback John Beck threw for three touchdowns and 256 yards on 26-for-39 passing.

Sophomore quarterback Mike Donato finished his second start 14-of-29 passing for 129 yards with an interception.

The Cougars (1-1) opened the game, marching 67 yards on 8 plays in 3:26, putting six points on the board when junior running back Curtis Brown surged past the line for a one-yard scoring run.

Brown led all rushers with 112 yards on 18 carries.

On the ensuing possession, the Panther offense found themselves backed up deep in its own zone. Consecutive delay of game penalties left Eastern (1-1) on its nine-yard line, needing 18 yards on third down to pick up a first.

With Donato back in the shotgun, the snap hit the quarterback in his face mask, and senior defensive lineman Daniel Marquardt fell on the ball on Eastern’s three-yard line.

Two plays later, Beck scored the Cougars second touchdown on a one-yard sneak.

A 20-yard field goal from sophomore Jared McLaughlin capped the scoring for BYU in the first quarter, giving them a 17-0 lead.

The Cougars then put up points via the air, scoring twice in the second quarter on passes of 31 yards and 6 yards, respectively, to senior wide out Todd Watkins, which gave BYU a 31-0 halftime lead.

The second touchdown pass to Watkins was deflected off the hands of sophomore middle linebacker Donald Thomas, who was covering a different BYU receiver at the goal line.

Watkins ended the afternoon with game highs in receptions (7) and receiving yards (93).

The Panthers showed more life in the third quarter, scoring the frame’s only points on 23-yard field goal from freshman kicker Zach Yates. The kick was set up after junior linebacker Clint Sellers forced Brown to fumble, with sophomore defensive tackle Tim Kelly falling on the ball at the Cougars’ 22 yard-line.

Eastern began the fourth quarter on a high note as senior cornerback Terrance Sanders picked off a Beck pass, giving the Panthers the ball on the BYU 39 yard line.

Donato and the Eastern offense then assembled their best drive of the afternoon, going 61 yards on 6 plays in 2:31. The big play on the drive was a 32-yard pass to sophomore Alicus Nozinor. Donato then kept the drive alive with a 13-yard scramble on third down, moving the ball down to the two-yard line.

Junior running back Vincent Webb ran untouched from the two to score, and after a successful Yates extra-point attempt, Eastern trailed 31-10.

But, the Cougars answered back, after Eastern extended their drive twice -once with a roughing the passer penalty and once with an illegal block below the waist penalty. Beck found the end zone for the third time, connecting with senior running back Naufahu Tahi for a six-yard scoring strike.

Tahi scored on a six-yard run with under a minute left to finalize the scoring.

BYU takes a week off before hosting TCU on Sept. 24, and Eastern ends a two-game road trip when it hosts Illinois State Saturday at O’Brien Stadium.
