Alabama schools make title comebacks

The pair of new Alabama schools made sure both Ohio Valley Conference championships stayed home.

The Samford men made up two-strokes to win the event by two for its first ever OVC title in any sports since they joined the conference in 2002.

The Bulldogs did not card a score over 75 in the four rounds that the private school used to form its final round score. Samford was led by senior Bradley Farmer who battled back from a three-shot deficit to win his final OVC event.

Farmer, the OVC Tournament MVP, shot a final-round 2-under-par 70 to finish the three-day event at 1-under par 213. The current holder of every Tennessee high school golf record waited until, potentially, his final collegiate event to win his first NCAA regulated tournament.

Jamie Frazer, Murray State’s 54-hole leader, could not hold on during the final day struggling home with a 74 losing by a single stroke.

Tennessee State senior and 2002 OVC champion Robert Dinwiddie was unable to begin and end his college career with an individual medalists title as he finished tied for 12th at 4-over-par 220. At the end of the event, Dinwiddie did not go home empty-handed as he was named OVC Player of the Year, which he also accomplished as a freshman.

Dinwiddie was joined on the All-OVC team with Farmer, Tennessee Tech junior Braxton Hunter, Southeast Missouri senior Matt Hillis and Murray State junior Kyle Shirley.

For the first time since 2001, OVC Men’s Coach of the Year went to a school that didn’t take home the trophy as Tennessee Tech’s Bobby Nichols was chosen.

The women’s tournament went down to the wire as Jacksonville State made a four-stroke comeback to win the event by two. Eastern Kentucky, 54-hole leader, was already at a disadvantage heading into the final round as the Colonel’s No.5 player Melissa Rosloniec was disqualified in the second round meaning EKU was forced to take all four scores.

One Eastern Kentucky player was able to celebrate as senior Brittany Klein won the individual medalist honors by one.

One could make the argument that the Henderson, Ky., native tried to give the tournament away by shooting a 9-over-par 81 in the final round.

Colonel’s teammate Kelli Warner finished in second– one stroke away– after shooting consecutive scores of 75 after a first round 82.

Behind a sixth-place finish by Dale Morris and four of five players ranking in the Top 20, Eastern took fifth as a team. Morris was named to second-team All-OVC, and OVC defending champion Nikki Orazine finished in third individually and was named OVC Player of the Year.

Samford and Jacksonville State will compete in the NCAA Regional Championships and, for the first time ever, both genders received automatic berths for winning conference.
