Panthers finish season at Lantz

Eastern finishes its tough regular season schedule with two dual meets at Lantz Arena.

The Panthers wrestle Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m. tonight in Lantz Arena and host No. 16 Missouri, at 2 p.m. on Saturday to wrap-up their season.

These final two meets are the only consecutive home meets for the Panthers (3-7) this season. The Eagles (6-9) have won three of the last four dual meets and had their first Mid-American Conference victory of the year when they beat Buffalo 20-19.

Eastern Michigan’s starting line-up features three ranked wrestlers: No. 18 Ed Magrys (184 pounds), No. 17 J.J. Holmes (174 pounds) and No. 15 Jermain Thompson (149 pounds).

“They’ve put together a pretty solid team right now,” Eastern head coach Ralph McCausland said.

One of the top match-ups of the night will come at 174 pounds, when Holmes will face the Panthers’ No. 20, Kenny Robertson (31-9). Eastern red-shirt freshman Greg Perz (15-11) will face off against Magrys at 184 pounds. Perz has won eight of his last 10 matches, and McCausland is positive about his chances this week.

“This will be a great test for him,” McCausland said. “These matches give him a good opportunity.”

Sunday is senior recognition day for the Panthers, and Eastern will only have to say goodbye to one wrestler. Heavyweight Pete Ziminski (13-6) is the lone Eastern senior who will face No. 16 Missouri, who blanked Eastern 45-0 last year, in his final home meet.

The Tigers wrestled Tennessee-Chattanooga Wednesday night but lost their previous four matches to No. 1 Oklahoma State, No 2. Iowa State, No. 6 Nebraska and No. 7 Oklahoma.

Ziminski will have a tough test on his final night in Lantz when he wrestles Tiger freshman Chase Wettenkamp (22-14).

Once again, the highlight of the night will be the 174-pound weight class, when Robertson will wrestle No. 2 Ben Askren (27-1). The pair has met twice this season with both victories going to Askren.

“The guys are hanging in there (despite the tough schedule),” McCausland said. “With the exception of Ziminski, we have all underclassmen, so this is good experience for the future.”
