Volleyball: Crabtree honored with national award

The accolades continue to pile up for Eastern volleyball’s freshman setter Maren Crabtree as Collegiate Volleyball Update named her Freshman of the Year.

Crabtree recorded the most prolific season a Panther setter has ever enjoyed, breaking Eastern’s single-season assist record (1,544), single match records for three games (56) and five games (76) and freshman digs record (375).

She also was named American Volleyball Coaches Association Midwest Region Freshman of the Year, nabbed Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year honors and earned a Second Team All-OVC spot.

Despite all of the recognition, Crabtree said she isn’t satisfied.

“There’s been so much time since the end of the season, and we’ve started working already for next season,” Crabtree said. “All I am concentrating on is getting better next season; all of that is just in the past.

“I don’t want my freshman year to be my best season.”

The Panthers, the OVC co-champion, finished the regular season with a 25-6 record, a 16-win improvement from the 2003 season.

“The awards wouldn’t mean nearly as much if we hadn’t have had as good of a season as we did,” Crabtree said.
