Liesen the great

Eastern women’s soccer player Beth Liesen is going where no other Ohio Valley Conference soccer player has gone before.

Finishing 12th nationally with 49 points and 14th with 20 goals, Liesen was chosen to the First Team All-Great Lakes Region by SoccerBuzz Magazine.

Liesen, who had previously been named to SoccerBuzz’s All-Freshman team in 2000 and Third Team in 2001, accumulated more points than any player in school history and OVC history.

The senior forward scored 62 goals and totaled 149 points in her four years at Eastern, while leading the Panthers to three consecutive NCAA Women’s College Cup appearances.

This past season Liesen received her fourth nomination for OVC First Team honors while also being named the OVC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

The early childhood education major also excelled in the classroom by being named to First Team Academic All-District V by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

“She came here with all the accolades and she has met all of our expectations and even more,” Eastern head coach Steve Ballard said. “I don’t think a university, a program or even a coach could ask for a better representative than what Beth presents. Eastern is losing an unbelievable person.”

Liesen was one of 13 players named to the Great Lakes First Team. Other players include Tara Hurless, Meghan Kolze and Leisha Alcia of Illinois; Amy Warner and Melissa Tancredi of Notre Dame; Colleen Hoban and Melissa Miller of Ohio State; Annette Kent from Purdue; Kim Grodek from Indiana; Tesia Kozlowski from Dayton; Julianne Sitch from DePaul; and Andrea Sied from Michigan State.
