Panthers play home finale

Eastern Illinois’ volleyball team will face a pair of competitive conference matches during Senior Weekend, where it will honor its only senior Chandra Hensley. The Panthers take on Morehead State University on Friday and Eastern Kentucky University on Saturday.

Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State both have records bettering Eastern’s in the OVC and overall seasons.

With an 8-4 OVC record and a 17-10 overall record, the Eastern Kentucky Colonels will bring major heat to Lantz Arena. Last year, Eastern maintained an even record against Eastern Kentucky; winning the first match, but losing the second matchup later in the season. Friday is the premiere of this year’s matchup between the Panthers and the Colonels.

The Morehead State Eagles hinder directly behind conference leading Murray State, who shut out Eastern this season with a 3-0 win. The Eagles post a 10-2 OVC record, exceeding Eastern’s by five games. Morehead also brings to the court junior outside hitter Jennifer Kennedy, who owns an intimidating record of 4.22 kills per game, out doing the Panthers’ team-leader Erica Gerth’s record of 4.06 kpg.

Although the Eagles and Colenels both have impressive records and teams, the Panthers are not intimidated by what they have to offer.

“We’re not scared at all, we’re actually excited,” said sophomore middle hitter Megan Kennedy. “EKU and MSU have both had some losses and it’s our turn to go after them when they’re down.”

As a team, Eastern wants to focus on playing together and giving it their best shot against the conferences best competition.

With only four more conference games to play, wins this weekend are a must for the Panthers. Eastern is currently tied with Tennessee Tech at seventh place and only two games behind Austin Peay and Jacksonville State. To enter the OVC tournament, at least a sixth place finish is needed. A pair of wins could bring forth an upward move in the OVC for the Panthers.

This weekend’s matches both begin at 7 p.m. in Lantz Arena
