Eastern cuts deep

The Eastern women’s rugby team made sure it quickly put its first loss in 15 games behind them.

The Panthers got on the scoreboard in the first three minutes and got their biggest win of the season with an 86-3 bashing of Arkansas Saturday at Lakeside Rugby Field.

After only scoring five points in a 35-5 loss to Penn State two weeks ago, Eastern quickly forgot it.

“I think that was the key and sometimes after a loss you are not sure how your psyche is going to be,” Eastern coach Frank Graziano said. “It was a really good day.”

After a miscue deep in their zone, the Razorbacks found themselves down 7-0 early as Jamie Buenzow got the Panthers first try and conversion at 37:23.

Four minutes later, Becky Carlson made a fake pass to a teammate and darted into the end zone for a 12-0 Eastern advantage after Carlson’s conversion attempt bounced off the right upright.

The Panthers made it 19-0 with a 45-yard run down the left side from senior center Mary Archer followed by a made conversion.

Arkansas then suffered the biggest blow of the game as it saw one of its best players go down with a leg injury. The Razorbacks only brought 15 players on the rip and were forced to play a player down for the rest of the game.

“They didn’t travel real well and they were much better last year,” Graziano said. “Their best player Mindy Sunwall got injured in the first 20 minutes and they got into trouble.”

Eastern took a 59-0 lead into the half, getting many players involved in the scoring rotation.

“Top to bottom, lots of people scored,” Graziano said. “Since we had a great lead we were able to get a lot of people on the field.”

The Panthers continued to pile on the score in the second half, but the Razorbacks finally got on the scoreboard late in the half on a penalty kick from Susan McLeod.

Junior winger Nikki Ponce completed four tries in the first half while Archer and Carlson each had three.

Prior to the start of the game, the team recognized its three seniors who were playing their final game at home.

Graziano said Taake, Archer and Carlson are going to be missed at the end of the season.

“The three seniors we recognized today are going to be very difficult to replace,” Graziano said. “Statistically they are one, two and three in every category.”

Eastern now moves on for a three-game road trip the next three weeks starting with a 3 p.m. game at Stanford next weekend.
