Trouble in Chicago

Eastern’s women’s basketball team turned the ball over 23 times in a lost to Loyola Tuesday night.

“We’re not going to win many games when we commit 23 turnovers and force only 10,” said head coach Linda Wunder.

Fourteen of those 23 turnovers came in the second period. The Panthers committed 15 personal fouls making their opponents go to the line 14 times.

Loyola was 12-of-14 from the line.

Eastern led Loyola at the end of the first half by six points, but came out in the second hitting only five of their first 21 shots. The Panthers only made 41.7 percent of their shots in the game compared to Loyala’s 45.9 percent.

“The most disapointing part is we gave up 72 points to a team that was averaging only 61,” Wunder said.

Loyola scored 72 points to Eastern’s 59.

Eastern’s top scorer junior guard Lauren Dailey was 7 of 15 from the field recording 16 points and six assists.

Teammate redshirt-freshman Ashley Kearney scored a career high of 11 points. Kearney was four of seven from the field.

Senior foward Brooke Gossett, team leader in points per game, had 11 points and nine rebounds. Gossett is averaging 13.5 points a game.

Four players from Loyola were in double digits.

“We couldn’t guard anyone,” Wunder said.

Sophomore guard Ciara Henderson scored 24 points leading the team. Henderson was 7-of-15 from the field, 3-of-6 from the arch.

Junior Maggie Toczylowski had a productive night. She scored 12 points shooting 5-of-7, six rebounds, and three blocks.

Loyola wins its first game of the season movin to a 1-3 record. Eastern loses its fourth game of the season going to 1-4.

“We need to put forty minutes of basketball together,” Wunder said. “Loyola played with more heart than we did. They deserved to win.”

Eastern will return to the Lantz Arena to face Southern Illinois University on Saturday night.
