Tennis squads warm up inside

The men’s and women’s tennis teams adjusted to the inclimate weather by holding their Tuesday competition indoors, defeating Chicago State 4-1.

“When you go in there with the elements, if you dwell within the elements, you’ve lost your focus, and that’s one thing I do commend them for,” head coach Brian Holzgrafe said. “I heard every player on Chicago State’s team say the lights are bad, the courts are sticky, the nets are bouncy, and every other element.

“I didn’t hear one of our kids say a word. They knew what to prepare for.”

Both teams felt the effects of Lantz Fieldhouse, dealing with the unfamiliar indoor court surface and dimmer lighting while the track and field teams circled around the competition.

“For a six-inch snowy day, it was somewhat competitive,” Holzgrafe said. “Both teams were a little like, ‘Oh my gosh, we’re playing in here.”

Both the men’s and women’s teams took the win based on singles competition, as doubles play was not necessary after the 4-1 win.

On the men’s side, players moved up positions on the court as No. 1 singles player C.J. Weber continued to sit out with an ankle injury.

“The team stepped up, and here’s why. When you lost a top player, everyone has bumped up a mark,” Holzgrafe said. “The team has been very responsive to having to take on a better load and to come out with the win, Chicago State was good.”

Pluta defeated Chicago State’s Robert Gates 6-4, 6-4 while No. 2 Brandon Blankenbaker won 6-3, 7-5.
