Swim teams host final meet of the year

The finale is upon us.

The Eastern swimming and diving teams will host the final meet of the season at noon Saturday when they face the Billikens of Saint Louis University.

Both Panther teams were victorious against Saint Louis in a Dec. 1 meet, but head coach Raymond Padovan said he will not take the lack of depth on the Billikens side of the pool too much for granted. He said the team has done it in the past.

“We got a little bit more depth,” Padovan said. “They have some good people. They are a talented team”

Both teams have had success this season, but the two bright spots are: the men’s chance to go undefeated at a perfect 12-0, and junior Allison Ken4ny (20-0 overall – 50, 100, 200 Freestyle) has a chance to finish undefeated as well if she wins her two races on Saturday.

The men (11-0) have a chance to rewrite the record books with a win on Saturday. This team holds the records for most wins and most consecutive wins in a season by a men’s team, and is looking to accomplish one of the team’s goals by going undefeated on their road to the conference meet.

The women (9-2) are looking to win out the season and capture their 10th-straight and overall victory, after narrowly losing the first two meets.

The only aspect, Padovan said, the women’s team might have trouble with is the diving, where the Billikens swept the Panthers in both the one- and three-meter events in December.

This meet will also include a parting ceremony that the team will hold for the seniors and with the meet being held home, at Lantz Natatorium, it radiates more of a significance for those in attendance and for the seniors.

“It’s the best place to be,” Padovan said, “especially for the seniors to have your last meet and your last meet in Lantz pool all at once.”
