Official ‘sissy-coach of the decade’: Steve Spurrier

Through much debate and deliberation, I have decided to once again to highlight certain events in the sporting world.

Although I don’t want to compromise on dramatic effect or style, I will publicly state that I may have used too many negative comments in my last column and I will try to keep those type of remarks to myself.

First, let’s start with the new head coach at Notre Dame,Tyrone Willingham. Even though he wasn’t the school’s first choice, they possibly may have made the best decision in recent history.

Not only will Willingham bring every recruit from Stanford, he will get those undecided about going to South Bend, the kids from the Midwest and west coast that were a year or two out of college.

But most of all, he will get “speed” players from all over the country to be first on the team. Plus, the more guys he gets to sign, the quicker it will be until he starts playing with his own guys and not Bob Davies’ players.

I don’t feel sorry for Dennis Green, the former head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. I am happy that he is out of bad situation.

He will be rid of Randy Moss and his antics. He will be rid of Chris Carter (maybe) and is demands, and he will be rid of the tragic situation in Korey Stringer’s death.

I do, however, feel sorry for the rest of the staff and ownership in Minnesota because the Stringer family is suing them for $100 million and the remaining money left on his contract. They will win their suit and I hope new head coach Mike Tice seriously thinks again about calling anyone a ‘big baby’.

Steve Spurrier, new head coach of the Washington Redskins, may be a genius on offense, but he will need a defensive coordinator if he wants to win more than five games next season.

He officially has earned the title of “sissy-coach of the decade” because he has stated that he wants nothing to do with the scouting and signing of new players, and doesn’t want to deal with the salary-cap issues.

I don’t care how much he was signed for; if he thinks he can pull one of his trademark tirades, he is sorely mistaken.

Mike Tyson canceled his January fight with “merciless” Ray Mercer to take the April 19 fight with heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, only to have that fight called off.

If Tyson, the second greatest fighter of our generation, would have never gone to Cuba maybe he would have regained the belt and then flipped out and gone to jail … again.

Holyfield wants to fight John Ruiz for the fourth time. Is it me, or is he just fighting to give donations to the “Me-and-Kemp-have-too-many-illegitamite-kids fund?”
