Homework over break pays off

After three weeks of individual training, the men’s track and field team is regrouping before this weekend’s meet at the University of Illinois to see which athletes did their homework over break.

“With finals and three weeks off, (Tuesday) is practice day two and things are looking good,” head coach Tom Akers said. “It seems like most of them did their homework over break, so right now we’re finding out where we’re at.”

The team opened its season Dec. 7 at Illinois State’s Early Bird meet where Akers saw positive aspects of the team in many areas.

“I was pleased with the results from Illinois State,” Akers said. “We showed better performances than we did there last year, so we’re a little ahead in more areas than we’re behind. We still have a long way to go.”

January brings a series of three consecutive meets for the men’s team beginning with the Illinois Quadrangular meet Saturday which will be followed by two home meets, the EIU Mega Meet Jan. 19 and the EIU Quad meet Jan. 26.

“We need to get back into the flow,” Akers said.
