Wishful thinking for X-mas

Believe it or not, December is here and that means it time for all the good boys and girls to finish their Christmas lists. The jolly old fat man can’t bring you everything your heart desires if you don’t let him know what you want.

Now, I have to admit it is getting a little late. In my younger days I made sure both mom and Santa had my Xmas wish list at least 40 shopping days before Christmas. Santa never seemed to mind the advance notice, but mom would often remind me that she had to cook Thanksgiving dinner before she could start hunting for presents.

Now that I’m older, I’ve been able to hold back on publishing my wish list until after I’ve had my pumpkin pie. I have also been able to refine my requests.

After Saturday’s football game, this Christmas I want a video replay screen for O’Brien Stadium. And if the groaning and grumbling I heard in the stands during the loss to Northern Iowa is any indication, I’m not the only one who would like to see O’Brien equipped for replays.

It was the fourth quarter, and after a late-hit penalty resulted in a UNI touchdown, the Panther offense was charging back. Eastern was close to getting back within three points, but an end zone interception gave UNI the ball.

The crowd, realizing that Eastern’s season could be coming to an end, wanted a replay. It appeared as if Northern Iowa’s Brent Browner was out of bounds when he grabbed the Tony Romo pass.

I heard many a fan ask why Eastern’s new video replay boards weren’t there when we truly needed them. After all, Lantz “Arena” is a bit more cozy than O’Brien. If you sit in the student section you’re so close that you can see the players sweat.

As with most football stadiums, the same can’t be said for O’Brien.
