Swimmers defeat Bradley, UIC

The men’s and women’s swim teams competed in their second weekend of the season Saturday as they traveled to Bradley Friday before hosting the University of Illinois-Chicago Saturday.

“Everybody really swam well this weekend,” head coach Ray Padovan said. “Overall, we swam much better on both the men’s and women’s side. We’re learning again how to race each week.”

Both the men and women defeated Bradley on the road and UIC in their home openers.

On the women’s side, the meet came down to the final event of the day – the 400 freestyle relay, and the Panthers came out on top.

“We thought we’d have a hard time winning this one, but it came down to the last relay and we won by tenths of a second,” Padovan said. “It was fun to win one you didn’t think you would.”

The 400 relay pulled the winning time with the work of Allison Kenny, Alicia Wroblewski, Jordan Sher-brooke, and Jolene Jones.

Allison Kenny continued to remain undefeated in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle this weekend after winning both events in last weekend’s meets at the University of Louisville and Xavier University. Courtney Werbe finished first in the 100-meter breaststroke Saturday.

“Courtney did a super job in the 100 breaststroke and was really key to get us into that last relay,” Padovan said.

Beth Rhodes continued to swim strong for the Panthers in the butterfly during both meets this weekend.

On the men’s side, Eastern defeated Bradley before returning to Eastern to host the Flames.

“We had an easy time with Bradley, but UIC came close,” Padovan said. “It was a situation that really lacked depth. We only won four out of 13 events, but we still won.”

Despite UIC’s strong leaders in the events, the team lacked swimmers in the second, third and fourth positions to support their faster swimmers.

“They had some good people at the top,” Padovan said.

Rich Wahlgren continued to swim strong for Eastern in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.

“Rich swam exceptional, especially on Saturday,” Padovan said. “He’s been swimming great.”

Tom Wadson, a freshman for the Panthers, had a strong finish in the 1,000-meter freestyle at Bradley and Joe DeLuca continued to see success in the 200-yard butterfly.

“We have some real strength in our sprints and freestyles,”Padovan said. “It was a real good weekend.”
