Panthers primed for upset of No.1 Milwaukee

Look out Milwaukee, the Panthers are on the prowl.

The biggest game of the season so far for the Eastern women’s rugby team is Sunday when it will play against No. 1 Marquette University in the postseason.

In the past three years, the Panthers (3-3) have had a dismal 1-3 record against the Golden Hawks. They came up on the losing end of a 16-11 tilt in last year’s contest.

“It will be a very competive game,” coach Frank Graziano said. “If we can score in the 20s, we will have a good chance of winning.”

Graziano stressed the need for the team to play solid defense and the importance of not making any mistakes during the game. He also wants the squad to score whenever it has the oppurtunity.

“We will have to take advantage of scoring,” Graziano said. “We need to convert half of our good scoring chances, and we can’t make any mistakes.”

Last Sunday, the Panthers black-eyed the Buckeyes 42-12 and played a solid all-around game. This Sunday, they will be playing a team that is better than Ohio State.

Assistant coach Michelle Reed had a similar sentiment when it came to the topic of on field play.

“We don’t want to make any mistakes,” Reed said. ” They have captialized on our mistakes before.”

If the players have doubts about the game, neither of the coaches are showing any form of disbelief in the talent of the team.

“I am quite confident about the game if we play like we did last week,” Reed said. “We will just have to take one more step up.”

And Graziano restated comments he made after last week’s victory.

“We gained a lot of maturity last week,” Graziano said. “We will have to play better and isn’t that what we are supposed to do.”

Reed believes that this game will be a good test of character and of confidence.

“I would like to see them step up to a high level of experience,” Reed said. “Knocking off No. 1 will be a big confidence boost.”

If the Panthers do prevail Sunday, they will have a showdown for the regional chamionship against the winner of the game between No. 2 University of Illinois and No.3 Central Michigan. With the winner of championship game recieving a bid to the National Championship in a 16 team tournment style play-off next April in Orlando, Florida.
