Women’s rugby team taking off for Music City

What’s better, light on or off? Apparently, the entire Eastern Illinois women’s rugby team chooses lights on when they get down to business. And that is how they will be playing their next game on Friday night: under the lights and on the grass in Nashville at 7 p.m.

The game against the Vanderbilt University women’s rugby club has come full circle in the time span of a few days. It was scheduled for Friday then the game was moved to Saturday afternoon and then back to Friday night when the team from Clemson University chose to enter a tournament elsewhere.

“It’s for the best … because we don’t have enough bodies for both games anyway,” assistant coach Michelle Reed said.

It would have been a run-in for coach Frank Graziano with his former team. He held the head coaching positions for both the men’s and women’s clubs for six seasons from 1992-96 and had an overall record 91-38-4.

Although it may seem redundant, the Panthers are still feeling the ill effects of injury and are still uncertain on the exact number of players they will be bringing with them for the trip down south.

With the game moved forward to Friday, the team will be able to have a some free time to see what the great city of Nashville has to offer.

“We’ve got time for a little R&R for Saturday,” Graziano said.

As for the game, Mary Archer is looking of an all around positive experience. “We want to have some fun,” she said. “We’re just going to go down with as many people as we can and see what we can do.”

Not to diminish the talent of the Vanderbilt women, but sentiment on the Eastern side of the field leans more toward victory.

“It should be a good game and we should come out on top,” Ashley Jones said.

“It should get us back up to speed and make us ready for the next game.”

Reed has the same feelings towards Friday’s game by labeling it a “tune-up” game.
