CAA to elect new officers, approve new courses

The Council on Academic Affairs Thursday will elect new officers and add two courses to the general education requirements.

“We will elect a chair and vice chair for next semester’s CAA,” said CAA Chair Ron Wohlstein, sociology/anthropology professor.

Introduction to African-American Studies (1000G), one of the two courses, was revised to fill the social-behavioral segment of the new general education requirements. The course contributes to the segment by introducing students to an in-depth analysis of the events and issues which affect Africans and peoples of African descent, according to the proposal.

The course addresses the entire discipline of African-American Studies and the research that has been done in every subject area relating to African peoples. This course will be required for all African studies majors and minors.

The second course, African-American Experience (2000G), will examine the history, culture and human experience among the African Americans in the United States, according to the proposal. The course also will provide an overview of the black individual existence in America and each individual’s relationship with Africans worldwide. This course also will be placed into the social/behavioral segment of the core.

In other business, CAA will vote on proposed changes to the art history option in the bachelor’s of art. The revisions, made because of changes in history electives for general education, will lower the required credit hours from 20 to 28 credit hours to 17 to 25 credit hours.

Wohlstein said this will be the last CAA meeting of the semester, and there will be one meeting during the summer.
