CAA eyes admission change

The Council on Academic Affairs Thursday will be voting on a change in the admission procedures that will allow grade point averages to be automatically factored in to admission.

CAA Vice Chair Douglas Bock, who will be chairing the CAA meeting because Wohlstein will be out of town, said he believes there may be enough time for the three agenda items to be voted on before the forum on retention begins.

A change in the admissions policy that would allow a student’s cumulative grade point average to be factored into admission will be voted on last because of time constraints.

“This should not be viewed as a change of standards, but as a change in procedure,” said Frank Hohengarten, dean of enrollment management, in a memorandum to CAA.

In the current practice, the Admissions Review Committee would take into account a student’s cumulative grade point average when the student is first rejected by the class rank standard.

Under the change, the cumulative grade point average would be automatically figured at the first admission stage as a factor instead of class rank, if more beneficial to the student.

CAA will also be voting on the revision of two senior seminars, allowing them to qualify for three credit hours rather than their current two-credit hour earning.

The two senior seminars to be changed are Women in Science (4169G) and Plants and Civilization (4111G).
