New senior seminars may be added next year

Three new senior seminars may be added next year depending on the Council on Academic Affairs’ decision Thursday.

Last week’s agenda items were moved to this week because last week’s meeting was canceled.

“It seemed more judicious to hold the meeting off until (this week) so that we can add new agenda items at that time,” said CAA Chair Ron Wohlstein, sociology/anthropology professor.

CAA agenda items are required to be voted onto the agenda one week prior to action. There were no items to be added to the agenda last week, so Wohlstein chose to hold off the meeting until this week.

One of the three new senior seminars to be voted on, Impact of Communication Deficits: Adjusting to Cultural Demands (4175G), will provide a better understanding of cultural perception, misconception and expectations in verbal communicative demands, according to the proposal.

“The course is designed for students in different majors to enhance their knowledge of different communication disorders,” said Gail Richard, communication disorder professor.

Richard, who will be teaching the course, said the main object of the course is to reflect what is learned onto to the students major and career field.

“An example would be how deafness would affect one’s job or career,” Richard said.

Another senior seminar course up for approval, Nutritional Dilemmas and Decisions (4151G), will examine the relationship of food and nutrition in connection to multi-cultural practices, according to the proposal.

The rationale from the course is stated as awareness of pertinent issues increases the ability of an individual to make informed decisions. The proposal states that this understanding will be an asset for students.

The final senior seminar, Controversial Issues in Education (4105G), is structured to supply a forum for the discussion of educational issues that have been labeled as controversial.
