Lainey Banta, a junior art education major, sculpts a coil pot in Doudna on Friday. The piece is called “Tessy” and derives from the phrase “two-ton Tessy” because it is heavy. The pot is 22 inches tall and weighs around 10 pounds.

Francis Akosah Akwaboa, a graduate student studying art with a focus in metal sculptures, explains the multi-faceted elephant piece he works on Thursday night in Doudna Fine Arts Center. He uses pliers to work on the left leg of an African elephant, a species on the verge of extinction due to their use as a trade commodity. This fuller left side is an opposite parallel to the hollow right side of the elephant. The wood is representative of life and the environment they live in. The scraps of metal represent the materials used to hunt down the elephants. He wants to bring to light the impact of poaching animals on the environment and species that are affected by it.
