Charleston High School girls’ basketball will play Mattoon in the regional quarterfinals of the class 3A Illinois High School Association playoffs on Feb. 15, with the winner advancing to play top-seeded Civic Memorial.
The Trojans (5-21, 1-8) are one of the 8-seeds in the Civic Memorial Sectional, and the Greenwave (6-21, 1-6) are a 9-seed.
Charleston beat Mattoon on Saturday 29-28 to snap its 41-game conference losing streak. The two teams will meet again at Mattoon High School on Thursday for the teams’ final regular season game of the season.
“Playing them two times in three days is exciting for our girls,” head coach Alex Koebele said.
The regional quarterfinal, which is often referred to as the play-in round, is how teams seeded near the bottom of the bracket fit into the first round, which is called the regional semifinal.
Unlike the first round, the regional quarterfinal is not played at a neutral site. The higher seed hosts the game, meaning the Trojans will host the Greenwave at Baker Gym.
“We’re down two starters for the season,” Koebele said. “Playing at home, just like last Saturday, the fans helped us tremendously. The environment was great. Hopefully we can pack the place again.”
Charleston-Mattoon isn’t the only rivalry to be paired up in the Civic Memorial Sectional; 2-seed Marian will play 6-seed Herrin in the regional semifinal.
A tip off time for the play-in game has yet to be determined.
