Finances for students, employees to be explained

The human resources department aims to help employees who are new to campus adjust to complicated financial procedures through their “Responsibility for Account Manager Series” workshops.

The series’ website states, “If you are a financial manager or if you perform the duties of one, you need to attend these one-hour workshops.”

The workshop today is titled “Planning, Budget and Institutional Research Processes,” and will focus on how to work with a budget as well as plan one.

Julie Benedict, a training and development specialist for Eastern in the human resources department, coordinates this series of workshops.

“The program is for financial managers throughout the university, as well as designees, not just those with a title,” Benedict said. “It will be facts about financial management that everyone in these types of positions should know.”

The presentation will include representatives from the procurement and budget office, along with the office of training and development.

“We coordinated with the various offices involved in these processes including the offices of procurement who deals with travel and travel expenses,” Benedict said.

At the presentation, attendees will learn and review university procedures when going about tasks, such as budget planning, and an overview of planning and institutional research. Participants will also be taught the various forms and how to fill them out, file them and when their deadlines are.

Benedict describes financial managers as “the people in each department who are responsible for their budget and distribution of funds.”

The past programs have had a good turnout, according to Benedict.

“Its good, but to be expected, we get mostly people who are new to the university and campus and want to learn how to do things,” said Benedict “But we also get people who have been here a long time as well which is also good, there is always something new to learn.”

Benedict said she tries to plan beneficial programs that educate the various groups on campus and all are welcome to attend the Responsibility for Account Manager Series programs.

“It is geared toward faculty and staff with these duties, but all are welcome to attend,” Benedict said.

The presentation will take place today from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the Arcola-Tuscola Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.
