Season filled with ups, downs

As the Eastern volleyball season closes on a 11-20 record, the Panthers started had a lot to be proud of, but also some things to work on.

The Panthers would get their first win on a home stand against Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville when sophomore Reynae Hutchinson scored 14 kills and seven digs.

The home portion of the schedule would start on a two match-losing streak against Southeast Missouri and Murray State.

The Panthers would get one more victory against Austin Peay before going on a five match-losing streak.

They would fall to the likes of Tennessee State, Morehead State, and Tennessee-Martin via three match sweeps.

However, they would get their revenge, winning the next five match-ups, but the sweetest revenge would come against the Ohio Valley Conference leading Morehead State.

Morehead State, who was 13-0 in OVC action by the second meeting, seemed to be unstoppable in the conference.

It what may be the most shocking victory of the season, the Panthers swept the OVC defending champions as the offense went on a tear.

The Panthers would get 10 kills from Hutchinson and junior Emily Franklin and also 15 digs from senior libero Brittany Wallace.

They also held three Morehead State players to negative attack percentages.

Head coach Kate Price was very proud of her team taking down a challenge that many other teams could not.

“It just goes to show that records do not really matter and the most important match is always the next one,” Price said.

With the team struggling shortly after, the Panthers would take their final match of the season against Tennessee-Martin.

Franklin scored 20 kills and 14 digs for her sixth double-double this season while Hutchinson and Stephanie Arnold added nine kills each.

“The season may not have gone the way we wanted it to, but we know what works and what does not and we will use that next season to our advantage,” Price said.

The leader in kills for the 2011 season was Emily Franklin with 386 kills, averaging almost four kills a set.

Chrissie Albers led the team with an astounding 941 assists averaging 9.91 assists a set.

Alison Berens led the team in blocks with 91 and the dig leader was senior libero Brittany Wallace, who was four digs away from 400 digs in her final season as a Panther.
