President, mayor to dine with students

President Bill Perry and Mayor John Inyart will be meeting with students today.

Perry will be meeting with students during “Pizza with the Pres” and Inyart will meet with students during lunch.

National Panhellenic Council and the Black Student Union will be co-sponsoring the second installment of “Pizza with the Pres” with student government at 5 p.m. today.

“Pizza with the Pres” is an informal meeting between students and Perry in a more laid-back environment, according to Aseret Gonzalez, a senior sociology major and the student vice president for academic affairs.

Gonzalez said “Pizza with the Pres” is a learning opportunity where students can get to know who leads the University.

She said Perry is excited about meeting with students and he enjoys spending time to get to know the students.

Gonzalez said she also hopes that students will learn more about how administration is there to help students.

“Student government really cares about the students being able to have interaction with the administration,” Gonzalez said.

At the Student Senate meeting, Mary Lane, the vice president for business affairs and a junior communication studies major, announced today’s arrival of the mayor on

campus.

Inyart will also be joining students for a meal when he spends his lunch break at the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union Food Court from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.

Lane said Inyart plans on discussing any questions students have about the community, Eastern or even questions about himself.

Lane said it is important to get to know who the representatives are and to know that those representatives are here to help.

“I think it would be beneficial to talk to the mayor because you live here (in Charleston) nine months out of the year, and he’s in charge of the town you live in,” Lane said.

Lane also said that meeting with Inyart will allow students to meet with the mayor without having to go through all the regular channels.

“If you have any questions about the city, he’s right there to answer your questions,” Lane said.

Other items discussed at the Student Senate meeting included Jarrod Scherle, the student executive vice president and a graduate student, discussing the Student Action Team’s campaign for a new science building.

Scherle said he plans on filming a video where students discuss how the lack of an up-to-date science facility has affected their education and he will post the end result on YouTube and hand hard copies out to senators.
