Voting begins on hot topics

The first Board of Trustees meeting for 2010 will be held at 1 p.m. today in the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

A proposed change to the board’s governing policy that would allow faculty to publicly advocate their personal politics will be voted on.

“The proposed language reinforces a recent statute regarding the ability of university employees to participate in the political process, provided that such participation, with limited exceptions, is not done while on duty at the university,” General Counsel Robert Miller said. “The proposed language is new and expands the current policy.”

The policy was posted for review in Booth Library.

President Bill Perry’s decision to hire Bob Martin as vice president for university advancement is also up for board approval.

“I have the authority to approve a one-year contract for Martin,” Perry said. “But, anything longer than that requires board approval.”

Housing rates for fall 2010 and spring 2011 will be voted on based off of discussion during the finance and audit committee meeting at 10 a.m.

“The rates usually come up for review in January each year,” Vicki Woodward, director of university marketing and communication, said.
