The concepts behind academic freedom will be the topic for the Faculty Senate forum that has been moved from its Feb. 24 date.

Today’s meeting will narrow down details about the discussion’s abstract concept.

Faculty Senate meets at 2 p.m. in Room 4440 of Booth Library.

The senate hopes to decide what focus the discussion on academic freedom will take and come to a permanent date for the forum, said Senate Chair John Pommier.

“We are going to try to look at it as it addresses higher education-textbook selection, mandates on syllabi and curricula,” he said.

The senate and the University Professionals of Illinois, who will be joining the forum, decided to push back the forum from its original date.

“It was just too close,” Pommier said. “We wanted more time to do this right and have a good discussion on the matter.”

Pommier said preliminary ideas for the forum include having an educational panel that would answer questions about academic freedom in higher education, possibly from different fields in education.

“Right now, its really broad,” he said. “We want to have an open discussion that invites different disciplines and different ideas.”

Local teachers are encouraged to attend the forum to gain perspective from the discussion, he said.
