Seats go uncontested

Cole Rogers, student vice president for student affairs, is the only candidate running for Student Body President during next week’s Student Government Elections.

Rogers said he was excited at becoming the next student body president.

“I’m a little disappointed that fewer people are getting involved in Student Government,” he said.

His plan is to change that.

All candidates for the election were required to turn in their ballots last Friday by noon.

Only three positions have opposition: student executive vice president, student vice president for business affairs and student vice president for academic affairs.

There were no contested seats in the Student Senate.

Levi Bulgar, student vice president for business affairs, and senate member Kent Ohms are both running for student executive vice president.

“It’s kind of daunting running as an independent,” Ohms said. “I feel I am the most qualified, so I thought I’d throw my name in and make a run,” Ohms said.

Student Senate member Leah Pietraszewski and accounting major Gabriela Garcia are running for student vice president for business affairs.

Student Senate member Rich Higginbotham is running against elementary education major Crystal Perez.

During the fall elections, allegations of fraud were brought up because some polls were left unmanned.

Senate candidates Chris Kromphardt and Tori Frazier contested the election and were later offered an open seat, but both declined.

Chad Quinones, graduate assistant in charge of the elections, said that the big problem with the fall elections was students not staying at the polls.

Students would leave the polls early in order to make it to class on time.

Organizations are being asked to help with the elections so more people get involved with the process.

At last week’s senate meeting, senate Speaker Jeff Lange told members to sign up for one shift at a polling place.

Anyone running for a position, though, may not work at a polling place.

There will be a Student Government debate at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Bridge Lounge in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

The election will be April 16-17, and the results will be announced at the April 18 senate meeting.
