Pennies for a panther

It would be 5 feet tall, 4 feet wide, 1 foot thick and would weigh 6,000 pounds. It would also be worth $10,000.

This is what 1 million pennies would look like, and that’s how many pennies the Student Government hopes to collect by the end of the school year with its Panther Penny Project.

Sponsored by Student Government, the Panther Penny Project’s overall goal is to bring a panther statue to school with the money raised.

The statue would be a gift from the academic year 2006-07, said Jillian Ruddy, chair of the senate’s Student Relations Committee.

“Pennies are just excess change in the bottom of your pocket,” she said. “Look at what the entire campus can do when we come together just to raise pennies.”

The statue will be placed in the Library Quad by the rock-filled areas in front of the Housing and Dining Office

“We’ve (members of the Student Relations Committee) been looking at a lot of different statues,” Ruddy said. “We’ve talked to a couple of different sculptors.but it’s still in the works right now.”

The collection container will be up before winter break, but pennies will start being collected before it goes up, she said.

Letters to Recognized Student Organizations will be sent out this week to start a “penny war” between different organizations, Ruddy said.

The Residence Hall Association has also been asked to participate in the Panther Penny Project.

At their meeting Friday, members decided that a committee would decide whether to participate, said RHA President Carrie Mueller.

The Programming Committee would need to make that decision, according to RHA bylaws.

“Each hall can choose to raise pennies or the halls can inform residents of how they can support it,” Mueller said.

The collection containers will be old oil drums painted panther blue with a plexiglass window so students can see the progress made, Ruddy said. They will be located under the Bridge Lounge of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

Other ideas for raising pennies include Panther Penny Parties, which would take place in the Library Quad once a month. The parties will not happen until the spring semester.
