BSU basketball game attracts fans

They did not play for glory. They did not play for money. They played on the Taylor Hall basketball courts with the love of the game as their motivation.

The Black Student Union basketball tournament attracted nearly fifty basketball players and a few fans Saturday evening despite the Eastern-Indiana State football game that was underway nearby.

Showing off their height, dunking and hanging on the rim, the players got ready for a four game competition that would determine the winner.

The players played to a backdrop of rap and hip hop music, while showing their own moves on the court.

“Today’s it’s gonna be predominantly rap and hip hop because today it’s a predominantly black and Hispanic crowd. I just kind of lay back and let it flow,” Veron Culley, senior journalism major, said.

“I think we’re gonna win, man,” said senior communication major Keyun Newbie. “I got a good team. We got a couple of good guys, athletic guys, we should do all right. We recruited. Best team in the rec. We all know each other’s games. Yeah, defending champs man. I play intramural, but this is my last year now.”

The games were officiated and the tournament went by single game elimination. The scores were close, 8-6 in an 11-minute first game and 11-10 in the second game. The last game ended on a steal and a dunk. Plaques were then passed out to the winners.
