Greek Week: King and Queen elections

Greek Week started off last Friday afternoon with elections for Greek King and Queen in the library quad. Sororities and Fraternities voted from noon to four Friday for their nominee of choice.

Nominees were nominated by their chapter.

“It is someone who models a good chapter member and is a good role model for others,” Said Tri-Delta nominee Kelly Putlak, a Junior elementary education major.

They must be a junior or senior with a GPA of 2.5 or higher, who has held an officer position or chairmanship position in the chapter.

Being nominated for King or Queen often comes as a big surprise to a lot of the men and women.

“The chapter voted.and I was shocked to find out I was our nominee!” said Tri-Sigma nominee Kristin Erdmann, an early childhood education major.

Many Greek students showed up to vote for their favorite nominees on Friday afternoon. As members approached the tent set up in the quad for the elections, they voted for two Kings and Queens of their choice.

“I voted for the girl from my sorority and then three other people. But it was kind of hard because I didn’t really know anyone else,” said Kristin Dohse, a freshman early childhood education major from the Tri-Delta House, “You vote for the person you feel is the best candidate.”

Voters also earned points for their house when they voted.

But votes from the students aren’t the only thing pending on whether or not someone wins. Nominees completed two separate applications that asked why they should be Greek Week Queen or King and what they would do to better Greek life. There was also an interview with three faculty members that lasted about twenty minutes.

“I got really nervous for that [the interview] but it turned out to be really laid back,” said Erdmann.

All areas determine whether or not a Greek wins: 10% is based on the application, 30% is based on votes, and 60% is based on the interview. Winners don’t get anything but the title of Greek Week King or Queen, but, according to Erdman, “It’s simply just the satisfaction of knowing that you won.”

Winners of the election will be announced at Airband on Saturday.
