Senate seeks bus service improvement

Students may find it easier to use the shuttle bus service Eastern offers in the coming months if Shawn Ready has his say.

Ready is a member of Student Senate and is also the chairman of the Shuttle Bus Committee. He said he feels the bus service, which has been running off and on since the 1970s, could be run more efficiently.

The communication, or lack thereof, with students around campus concerning the times and stops that the shuttle bus makes throughout the day is one of the main problems that Ready said he wants to fix immediately.

“The main thing this semester is to let people know where they need to be to use the bus services properly,” Ready said.

Currently, students can access the bus schedule in each of the residence halls and also on Eastern’s Web site. Ready said he feels that isn’t enough and wants to provide updated maps with all of the stops and also put up signs with exact details as to when and where the bus will stop around campus and Charleston.

Ashley Andersen, a senior special education major, has used the bus to get to classes and Wal-Mart, but was hardly aware of the schedule of the bus.

“I never recall knowing the schedule,” Andersen said. “I would basically just take the bus if it was sitting out in front of where I was.”

The current on-campus stops are the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union, Tarble Arts Center, Ninth Street Hall, Greek Court, Andrews Hall, University Apartments, Coleman Hall, The Triad (Weller, Ford and McKinney halls), O’Brien Stadium and.

Off-campus stops include County Market, the square, The Village Theatre, Art Park West and Wal-Mart. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, the bus also makes late-night stops at the intersections of Fourth and Polk, Fourth and Grant and Fourth and Lincoln.

Ready said he hopes the accessible information will increase the use of the bus service by the students.

“The students pay for it already through student fees,” Ready said. “They might as well use it.”
